Middelburg Municipal Theatre
The theatre on the Zuidsingel in Middelburg is designed as a compact, angular volume in red brick. Large windows of reddish bronze reflective glass, set in brass frames, articulate the façades and give the building a distinct yet restrained presence. The same warm palette of materials continues in the interior, establishing a consistent atmosphere throughout.
Within this clear volume, the programme is organised efficiently. The building accommodates a large and a small auditorium, a film theatre, foyers, a restaurant and a multi-purpose space. Technical areas, offices and delivery and loading facilities are integrated behind the scenes. Below ground level, within the 278-space car park, the changing rooms and foyer for performers are positioned alongside the orchestra pit of the large auditorium, allowing for direct and practical connections between stage and backstage areas.
