Aurora Building
The iconic Aurora building, located in Amsterdam at the corner of the Stadhouderskade and the Overtoom, is set for a sustainable renovation into a state-of-the-art office space with an international presence.
As a prominent landmark at the intersection of Amsterdam’s Centrum, Zuid, and West, Aurora is one of the city’s first modernist anchor points. Designed in the 1960s by renowned Dutch architect Piet Zanstra for the Aurora Life Insurance Company, the building is distinguished by its elegant curved façade, which follows the natural bend of the street.
The building consists of a commercial plinth with spacious office floors of nearly 1,000m² above, offering flexible and high-quality workspaces. The renovation will honour Aurora’s architectural heritage while introducing modern sustainability features. Key elements such as the characteristic columns, natural stone façade, storefront volumes, and the single-storey roof structure were designated as monumentally valuable in 2022 and will be carefully preserved. At the same time, the project embraces innovation by integrating new elements. A green garden at the ground floor will connect seamlessly to the surrounding urban green spaces. The design extends upwards with a new green atrium and landscaped rooftop terraces, fostering a healthy work environment and strengthening the building’s relationship with the city. An upgraded plinth and enhanced roof structure will further improve functionality and aesthetics.
Sustainability is a central focus of the project, which aims to achieve a BREEAM certification. Measures such as increased transparency, improved insulation, and incorporation of green spaces contribute to a pleasant and well-balanced workspace, addressing noise, heat stress, and air pollution. The Aurora building is an ideal location for top national and international companies. Its proximity to Amsterdam's city centre and accessibility further enhances its appeal to high-end office tenants.
