Leidsche Rijn urban development
The proposal redevelops a city centre block for Leidsche Rijn, the expansion area for the city of Utrecht to house an additional 80,000 inhabitants by the end of 2025. At the intersection of the A2 motorway and a variety of public transport facilities, the new urban ground level was sloped to create free horizontal flows for pedestrians, to slow traffic, and to shorten vertical connections to expedition and parking areas.
Situated close to the train station, Block D4 is the highest block, consisting of a fully occupied commercial ground floor and a variety of apartments on top of an inner court. Block E4 is anchored to the new urban street structure and to the park by a terraced landscape that forms a gradient transition to the park space. with façades coordinated with the other blocks. E4 is comprised of apartments and commercial units wrapped around a small courtyard, behind a façade designed to match the surrounding buildings which seamlessly integrates the block into the neighbourhood.
