Zuidwijk De Burgen Housing
This project restructures a neighbourhood in Zuidwijk, in the south of Rotterdam. The neighbourhood was originally developed as part of an extension in the 1950s-60s based on an urban plan by Willem van Tijen. Nearly all the mid-rise blocks were demolished to make way for single family low-rise residences. Over the course of this revitalization, 1000 dwellings on roughly sixty plots were replaced by 600 dwellings of double the size.
With a realistic parking ratio of two cars per dwelling, the resulting neighbourhood has an increased building density and a 50% reduction in the number of inhabitants. The design focuses on retaining and reinforcing the abundant natural green spaces and original structures characteristic of post-war districts. This was achieved by maintaining the footprints of the old buildings but inserting a different typology: single family dwellings with collective gardens.
