Beurssite Bruges
Beurssite Bruges is a proposal for the congress and exhibition centre at the Beursplein, in the UNESCO-listed medieval city center of Bruges. The design is a contemporary response to the characteristic roof-scape of Bruges, while offering the experience of a continuous square on ground level. In each of the four corners, the building’s logistics are housed in supporting legs, which provide an unobstructed, flexible exhibition space of 4500m2 in the centre of the plan. Transparent facades provide continuous connection between the building and city.
Supported by the legs, the large volume houses a 4000m2 conference centre, sculpted to resemble the scale and shape of the inner city. The building’s presence is further dematerialized through its anodized aluminium cladding. Visitors enter underneath the generous overhang, then move up through the space via an enclosed escalator, arriving on the conference level’s balcony overlooking the city. The sculptural roof creates patios and spatial variety, creating a diverse space with interactive interior and exterior views.
