China’s megacities are establishing a new paradigm for the contemporary Central Business District through their bold scale and rapid development. XLW9 employs the rational logic of the grid by embedding and refining the preexisting grid of Tianjin, taking the same squared shape to another level of precision. This refinement creates a variety of unique urban conditions: a diversity of parks, public spaces, housing typologies, high-rise buildings.

The 350 x 300-meter plot is half-covered by towers, residential, and retail buildings, with 20% of this space devoted to green areas. The height of the new development slopes from 100 to 6 meters to optimize the number of south-facing South spaces and to give the buildings views of the highest tower of the CBD. The landscape is composed of a large green cross connecting North-South and East-West and a series of boardwalks, private courtyards, and a sport area located along the navigable river.
